Course Overview

Delegates are assessed throughout the course by direct observation, simulation and role play. The course covers:

• Applying immediate first aid in the event of an accident/injury on board ship
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
• Fractures
• Heart attack, choking & asthma
• Treatment of bleeding, burns & shock
• Transporting a casualty on board ship

The course is also included in our STCW Basic Safety Training Week

Career Applications – Basic requirement for Merchant Navy, some Oil & Gas installations, and the superyacht industry.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of the course is to give all delegates a basic knowledge of the immediate actions to be taken upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency on board. The course teaches basic first aid and life-saving skills and emphasis is placed on practical work during training.

Physical and Stressful Demands

Training and/or assessment activities contained within this Standard may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.

Prerequisites
Valid in-date medical or fitness to work certificate (Valid within 12 months)
Course Outline

Acquire competence in the theory and practice of the following:

  • Have an appreciation of the basic body structure and its functions
  • Make an assessment of the needs of casualties and threats to their own safety
  • Have an understanding of immediate measures to be taken in cases of emergencies including the ability to:
    • Position the casualty
    • Apply resuscitation techniques
    • Control bleeding
    • Apply appropriate measures of basic shock management
    • Apply appropriate measures in the event of burns and scalds, including electrical and chemical burns
    • Apply rescue and transport of a casualty technique
    • Improvise bandages and use materials in an emergency kit
    • Knowledge of basic fracture immobilization techniques
Certification

On successful completion of the course, participants will receive an Elementary First Aid (EFA) certificate approved by the Liberian Registry, the world’s largest quality registry. Certificate validity is five (5) years.
