Course Overview

STCW Personal Survival Techniques (PST) is designed to form part of the minimum Basic Safety Training programme for seafarers and is a mandatory requirement for anyone who wishes to work at sea.

The course includes:
• Main types of maritime emergencies
• Types of life-saving appliances and survival craft
• Equipment in survival craft
• Location of personal life-saving appliances
• Principles of survival during a maritime emergency
• Practical sea survival sessions in our purpose-built sea survival facility

The course is also included in our STCW Basic Safety Training Week

Who should attend

All seafarers. Career Applications – Basic requirement for Merchant Navy, some Oil & Gas installations, and the superyacht industry.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of the course is to give all delegates a basic knowledge of the actions to be taken by individuals to protect themselves in emergency situations and includes practical training in the use of life jackets and inflatable life rafts. Exercises are carefully supervised by qualified staff and can be undertaken by non-swimmers.

Physical and Stressful Demands
Training and/or assessment activities contained within this Standard may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.
Prerequisites
Valid in-date medical or fitness to work certificate (Valid within 12 months)
Course Outline

Acquire competence in the theory and practice of the following:

  • Types of life-saving appliances normally carried on ships
  • Equipment in Survival Craft
  • Location of personal life-saving appliances
  • Principles concerning survival at sea including:
    • Value of training and drills
    • Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment (PPE)
    • The need to be prepared for any emergency
    • Actions to be taken when called to survival craft stations
    • Actions to be taken when required to abandon ship/offshore installation
    • Actions to be taken when in the water
    • Actions to be taken when aboard a survival craft (life raft etc.)
    • Main dangers to survivors
    • Rescue Techniques
Certification

On successful completion of the course, participants will receive a Personal Survival Techniques (PST) certificate approved by the Liberian Registry, the world’s largest quality registry. Certificate validity is five (5) years.
