Course Overview

It covers fire fighting procedures used at sea and in port, with particular emphasis on organisation, tactics and effective command, including liaison with shore-based firefighters. It also covers topics such as ventilation control, hazards involving dangerous goods, and the effects of fire fighting water on ship stability.

A variety of practical exercises involving fighting fires of different types and intensity are included. Students are assessed on their ability to successfully control fire fighting operations.

Who should attend

All sea going personnel designated to take charge and control of fire-fighting operations in an emergency situation.

Career Applications – Deck and Engineering Officers, Merchant Navy crew involved in fire fighting operations.

Aims & Objectives

The course aims to provide participants with knowledge and experience on how to take command, organize and train fire parties and control fire-fighting operations. The participants will be trained to ensure they attain knowledge of fire prevention and an ability to inspect and service fire detection plus extinguishing systems and equipment, Participants
will also be able to investigate and report on incidents involving fire.

Physical and Stressful Demands

Training and/or assessment activities contained within this Standard may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.

NOTE: Delegates undergoing fire fighting training will be required to complete and sign a confidential medical declaration to make us aware of any health problems, disabilities or injuries that we may need to take into account whilst attending this physically demanding course. It is therefore essential that delegates feel healthy and are physically fit to undertake such training.

Prerequisites

Delegates must possess one of the following:

• STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate
• MNTB Stage One Fire Fighting course
• Navy (Military) Fire Fighting course

Please note that current OPITO Courses do not meet the requirements for these prerequisites.

Valid in-date medical or fitness to work certificate (Valid within 12 months).

Acquire competence in the theory and practice of the following:

  • Introduction and principles
  • Theory of fire
  • Fire prevention
  • Fire detection
  • Fixed fire-extinguishing systems
  • Miscellaneous fire-fighting equipment
  • Ship fire-fighting organization
  • Fire-fighting methods
  • Fire-fighting drills
  • Review and final assessment
  • Control fire-fighting operations aboard a variety of situations, including vessels and
    ships
  • Organize, lead and train fire parties Inspect and service fire detection and fire
    extinguisher systems and equipment
  • Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire

Certification

On successful completion of the course participants will receive an Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF) certificate approved by the Liberian Registry, the world’s largest quality registry. Certificate validity is five (5) years.
