Course Overview

Upon completion of the course, delegates should be able to demonstrate the capability to:

• Take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch
• Operate a survival craft engine
• Manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship
• Use locating devices including communications, signalling apparatus and pyrotechnics
• Apply first aid to survivors.

Who should attend

All seafarers designated as coxswain or to take charge of a survival craft in an emergency situation or those seafarers who are crew of an on-board lifeboat. Career Applications – Mariners and Merchant Navy Lifeboat Coxswain or Crew.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of the course is to give all delegates the skills and knowledge required of a lifeboat or rescue boat coxswain.

Physical and Stressful Demands

Training and/or assessment activities contained within this Standard may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.

Prerequisites

Students require one of the following certificates:

• Approved Personal Survival Techniques
• Basic Sea Survival
• Royal Navy Sea Survival Course
• Fisherman’s Safety Training Course

Please note: OPITO/BOSIET/FOET is not an acceptable equivalent.

Valid in-date medical or fitness to work certificate (Valid within 12 months).

Certification

On successful completion of the course, participants will receive PSSR, PST, FPFF, and EFA certificates approved by the Liberian Registry, the world’s largest quality registry. Certificate validity is five (5) years.
