Course Overview

The Tropical BOSIET standard was originally developed jointly by the management of MEGAMAS Training Company SDN. BHD, Kuala Belait, Brunei and Brunei Shell Petroleum. The rationale behind this development was the need for a “fit for purpose” standard to meet the requirements for tropical regions. The key objective was to establish a basic competency based training standard, appropriate to the tropical waters surrounding much of the Brunei operations.

The safety induction element of the standard is so designed to address, in generic terms, the safety induction requirements for offshore employees commencing work in the offshore oil & gas industry. However the framework and structure may be adapted to incorporate the specific requirements unique to each operating region.

Tropical warm water operating areas are defined as those areas within geographical domain of the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn however areas outwith this domain with a consistent water temperature in excess of 15 degrees Celsius may also be included.

Who should attend

This training programme is designed to meet the initial offshore safety and emergency response training
requirements for personnel new (or returning) to the offshore oil and gas industry in a tropical
environment.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the T-BOSIET is to introduce delegates to the specific safety issues and regimes relevant to offshore installations, and to equip them with the basic emergency response knowledge and skills for traveling to and from offshore installations by helicopter in a tropical environment.

The objectives of the T-BOSIET Training are that delegates will be able to:

  1. Identify the generic hazards which are specific to offshore oil and gas installations, potential risks associated with those hazards, and how controls are put in place to eliminate or reduce risks.
  2. Identify key offshore related safety regulations and explain the basic safety management concepts
  3. Demonstrate, in a simulated environment, that they can use the safety equipment, and follow procedures in preparing for, and during helicopter emergencies – with particular focus on escaping from a helicopter following ditching
  4. Demonstrate sea survival and first aid techniques
  5. Demonstrate that they can effectively use basic firefighting equipment, and practice self-rescue techniques in low visibility situations, to include smoke filled areas.

Physical and Stressful Demands

Training and/or assessment activities contained within this Standard may include physically demanding and potentially stressful elements. All personnel who participate in such activities must be physically and mentally capable of participating fully.
